Born on the 15th of November 1968, Miguel Saraiva concluded his studies in architecture at the Universidade Lusíada, Lisbon, in 1995. In 1996 he founded the studio, today known as Saraiva + Associados, which has experienced a rapid process of expansion. Miguel Saraiva was the mentor and continues to be the driving force of this dynamic team, personally getting involved in all projects and the group’s strategy and processes of globalisation.
Alongside his intense activity in the company, Miguel Saraiva was vice-president of the Southern Regional Section of the Ordem dos Arquitetos (Portuguese Architects Association), in the three-year period 1998-2001. Among other awards and honourable mentions in the field of architecture, in 2011, on behalf of Saraiva + Associados, he received the prize for Best Architecture Studio awarded by the Portuguese magazine Construir. In 2013, the same publication awarded him the prizes for Best Private Project 2013, Best Studio 2013 and Architecture Personality of the Year 2013. In 2015, he was given the award for Career Distinction by the SIL (Portugal Real Estate Exhibition).
Miguel Saraiva is frequently invited to participate as a speaker in seminars, master classes and symposiums at architecture schools in various countries, as well as in workshops and debates about economy and globalisation.
Born in Mozambique on the 10th of November 1949, José Campos Forte graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, in 1974/75. In 1976-77 he completed a refresher course in Sanitary Engineering at DGSB, the General Directorate for Basic Sanitation; in 1995-96 he completed a post-graduate degree in Business Management at the ISCTE in Lisbon and, in 1998-2000, he got a post-graduate degree in Construction and Real Estate Management from the Faculty of Engineering at Minho University. He began his professional career in 1967 as a secondary school teacher. Between 1974 and 1981 he was the chief engineer for the regional basic sanitation units of Vila Real and Bragança, the regional branches of the General Directorate for Basic Sanitation. He then moved into the private sector, taking on the roles of construction manager, technical and commercial director, production coordinator and administrator in various renowned construction companies. In 2009 he joined Saraiva + Associados as an engineering consultant and currently serves on the company’s executive board.
Born in Lisbon on the 14th of January 1978, Bruno Pereira completed his architecture degree at the Universidade Lusíada, in Lisbon, in 2002. In 2000, he began his career at Saraiva + Associados as an apprentice, becoming part of the team as an architect in 2002. His architectural production is characterised by the programmatic and dimensional variety of his projects in the fields of architecture and urbanism. In 2008, he went on to coordinate numerous projects as team leader and, in 2011, he became an associate director of S+A.
Born in Lisbon on the 19th of June 1970, Luís Barros concluded his architecture degree at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, in 1994. Between 1991 and 1997 he specialised in programming, advanced CAD and BIM, completing with great success various courses in these fields. Between 1992 and 1994 he did an apprenticeship at an architecture studio and in 1994 he began his professional practice as a qualified architect. After spending some time in Macau, where he collaborated on a range of local and international projects, he joined S+A in 2000. Since then, he has been involved in the company’s projects as an architect, with a particular focus in the field of hospitals and planning, while also defining and implementing the group’s information systems. In 2006 he became an associate director at S+A and is now in charge of the area of healthcare buildings and information systems.
Born in Lisbon on the 17th of February 1973, Nuno Mona graduated in architecture from the Universidade Lusíada, in Lisbon, in 1998. That year he also developed various projects on a freelance basis and collaborated with a prestigious Portuguese architect on projects in the field of sustainable architecture. In 1999 he joined another Portuguese architecture studio, eventually joining S+A in 2000. Since 2006, he has been an associate director. In the S+A group his work is particularly focussed on the Algerian and Middle Eastern markets.
Born in 1981, in Leiria, Isabel Santos graduated in energy and environmental engineering from the ISLA (Instituto Superior de Línguas e Administração in Leiria) and completed a post-graduate degree in planning and sustainable construction from the Catholic University of Portugal. She has advanced training in strategic planning and control from the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria and commercial training in leadership and communication from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão in Lisbon. She has a diploma for the initial training course for trainers from TÜV Rheinland Portugal. She also has a post-graduate degree in energy law upgrading from the Institute of Legal and Political Sciences of the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon. Isabel Santos began her corporate career by founding a sustainability company, in 2005, after winning the Lena Business prize for best entrepreneurial project. She is now founding partner of S+A Green Lab, part of the S+A group, linking architecture to the world of sustainability.
Born in Lisbon in 1957, Henrique Cayatte is a designer, illustrator, professor and design consultant. He was a consultant for the special design projects for EXPO ‘98 and he developed its integrated signing and communication system. In 1999, he was awarded the National Design Prize for this global project. Later on, he was responsible for the conception and design of the Pavilion of Portugal – EXPO 2000, in Germany, and for the Pavilion of Portugal – EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan. Since 2004 he has been a guest professor at the University of Aveiro. He was commissioner-general and author of the general design of the exhibition 1990-2004 | Architecture and Design in Portugal, at the Milan Triennale. From 2004 to 2012, he was the president of the Portuguese Centre of Design and, since 2007, has been a board member of the Ibero-American Design Biennial.
From 2008 to 2014 he was a member of the executive board of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations) and, in 2006, was in charge of designing the Portuguese electronic passport and identification card. In 2016, he joined the S+A group and became founding partner of S+A Concept Design, which links design with architecture and the public space.
Born on the 30th of July 1950, in Hennaya, Algeria, Ghaouti Bekhechi was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Champaign Illinois, in the USA, in 1976. He began his professional career in 1979, in a well-known studio in San Francisco, USA. A DPLG architect licensed by the French government in 1981, that year he also became chief of department at the Institut National du Batiment au Ministère de l’Habitat, in Algeria. In 1983 he established an architecture studio in Oran and, in 2009, he became founding partner of S+A Algeria.
Born on the 13th of October 1967 in São Paulo, Brazil, Marcelo Montoro completed his architecture and urbanism degree at the Catholic University of Santos in 1991. In 1998 he developed a range of projects for a leading Brazilian company in the field of architecture. He won first place in an ideas contest with a project for the historic centre of São Paulo. He developed and participated in significant projects for the city, such as the Praça da República’s underground car park and CPTM (São Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company) train stations. He also participated in studies for the metro of Lima, Peru. In July 2010 he joined S+A group and became founding partner of S+A Brazil.
Born in Lisbon, in 1962, Alexandre Marques Pereira has a degree in architecture from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. He has taught at the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa since 1993 and, in 2006, was visiting professor at Auburn University, USA. In July 2012 he completed his doctorate in architecture, at the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa, concentrating on project relationships between Northern and Southern Europe. Alexandre Marques Pereira is frequently invited to participate as a speaker in seminars, conferences and symposiums at universities and public institutions. He is the founder of AMP Arquitetura which, in 2017, was integrated into the S+A group.
Born in Lisbon, in 1966, Bruno Dray completed his degree at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1992. He also got his first professional experience that year. During the course of his professional career his architectural production has been characterised by a great programmatic variety of projects in the fields of architecture and urbanism, with a particular focus on the area of education. He is the founder of AT93 which, in 2014, was integrated into the S+A group, when he became a partner with a particular focus on Portuguese-speaking African markets.
Born in 1953 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, João Francisco Caires made Funchal, Madeira, his residence, after which he became a Portuguese national. In 1976 he graduated in architecture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. He completed a specialised course in urban and regional studies in 1977. Since then he has established his own studios in Funchal and Lisbon and has developed joint projects with internationally renowned architects. In his studio he was the chief architect and coordinator, specialising in projects for collective housing, public facilities, urban planning and hotels. In 2011, in the context of S+A’s process of international expansion, he joined the team as a senior partner.
Born in 1981, in Lisbon, Liliana Soares graduated in environmental engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico. She has a diploma of advanced training in construction from the same institution. She also has international credentials for consultancy in certifying sustainable building projects with the BREEAM, LiderA and SBTool systems. She is currently senior partner of S+A Green Lab, coordinating the departments of sustainable building, materials and urban planning. She has carried out various projects in consultancy and certification of sustainable buildings in Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Kazakhstan and the Dominican Republic. She was also in charge of managing participation in co-financed, national and European R&D projects focussed on the development of new materials and innovative construction solutions for the sustainable building market. She has experience carrying out regional sustainability plans with public state entities, analysis of the life cycle of materials and technical and economic evaluation of sustainability measures. She also supported the globalisation efforts of the company, in particular in Brazilian and Mexican markets.
Born in Mozambique on the 1st of October 1962, Miguel Rocha completed his architecture degree at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1989. He began his career in the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau of Macau (DSSOPT) between 1989 and 1991, collaborating on various urban development plans. He returned to Portugal to work in two architecture offices in the period between 1991 and 1996. In 1996 he established Rocha & Saraiva (now Saraiva + Associados), where he remained until 2005. Between 2005 and 2016 he collaborated with the company of a Portuguese group interested in the area of real estate and, later, in 2017, he established WP Arquitetura, part of the S+A group.
Born in Lisbon on the 30th of April 1965, has several degrees in Architecture, Environmental Planning, and Project Evaluation and Management. For the past 15 years, he was Development Director of a real estate investment company, where he was responsible for programming and developing touristic projects. He is also Auditor of the Portuguese sustainable construction certification scheme, LIDER.A. In 2018, he established PRS Arquitectos, part of the S+A group.
Born on the 1st of June 1981, in Lisbon, Rui Carvalho completed his architecture degree at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 2005. In 2006 he did a nine-month academic placement in Rome, in the field of restoration and interior design. In March 2007 he joined Saraiva + Associados as an apprentice, subsequently becoming part of the studio’s production team. In 2008 he was given a permanent position in Algeria, overseeing projects in the fields of housing, industry and commerce. In February 2010, with the opening of the Oran office, he took on the position of Country Manager for Algeria. In 2017 he moved to Malaysia and Singapore as regional coordinator of Asian markets.
Born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1989, Steve Candeias obtained a master’s in architecture from the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa in 2014. He joined the S+A team at the beginning of 2015. After six months at the group’s headquarters, in August 2015, he went on an international assignment to represent S+A in Algeria, developing his expertise as a technical and commercial architect. Since the beginning of 2017 he has carried out the role of country manager in Algeria.
Born in September 1982 in Mexico City, Juan Pablo Zetina graduated in architecture from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional de México, in 2005. He worked in local architecture offices with a focus on environmental and construction practices; water, energy, and waste management; natural resource use; landscaping and urban planning. Juan Pablo Zetina came to specialise in sustainability after earning, in 2013, a credential in LEED certification awarded by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) and, later completing various training courses in Life Cycle Analysis Management. In 2016 he joined the S+A group in Mexico and, since 2017, has been country manager there.
Born on the 30th of October 1984, in Alcobaça, Susana Ramalho graduated in urban planning architecture in 2007, from the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. She also undertook a course in landscape architecture in 2006, at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice. She began her professional career as a sustainability specialist. In 2009, she gained a post-graduate degree in sales and marketing management, in Lisbon. She attended various specialised training courses in sustainability, specifically the course for SBTool PT-H qualified assessors, in 2010, the LEED course in 2012, and more recently, in 2015, the BREEAM training course, in London. She joined the S+A group in 2014, in S+A Green Lab and, currently, is country manager of Kazakhstan and Project Leader of S+A Green Lab in the same country.
Born in 1982 in Bogotá, Colombia, Andres Cerón graduated with a degree in architecture from the Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, in 2005 and, later in 2008, completed a master’s in housing of the 21st century at the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain. Between 2005 and 2013, he worked in two important architecture studios, where he had the opportunity to develop very diverse projects. In 2013 Andres Cerón joined the S+A group, in Colombia. Motivated in particular by social housing projects, his priority is the relationship between the project and the final client. With an architectural production characterised by the dimensional variety of his projects in the areas of housing, offices and retail, he currently coordinates S+A Colombia, as partner.
Born in 1970, Miguel Castro Fernandes graduated with a degree in international relations from the Universidade Lusíada, in Lisbon. He has vast experience in commercial sectors and trade marketing and has been commercial and general manager in various American multinationals such as Network Associates and Symantec. He joined the S+A group in March 2011 as manager of new business in the São Paulo office. He was responsible for supervising the development of new business in Brazil and Latin American countries locally and also provided consultancy for clients in the commercial sector. In 2017 he was invited to take on the role of regional market coordinator for Latin America, as a partner.
Born on the 27th of August 1949 in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, Manuel Rocha de Carvalho completed his degree in architecture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon in 1975. He then undertook an apprenticeship at the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, where he developed projects for the construction of airport terminals. He began his professional career as an architect developing projects for hospital and hotel facilities. In 1974 he worked as a consultant in development projects and, in 1975, he began working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. In 1987 he set up an architecture studio and, later, in 2011, he became a partner of S+A, as the group’s regional coordinator for Middle Eastern markets.
Born on the 12th of January 1976, Paulo de Sousa completed his degree in architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Moderna de Lisboa, in 2000. He was then invited to develop a doctoral thesis at the IUACC (Institute of Architecture and Building Science) in Seville. That same year he began to work at an architecture studio between Lisbon and Macau, and collaborated with Hong Kong University Faculty of Architecture. In 2007 he joined S+A where, since then, he has been an architect for company projects, specialising in the area of office buildings. After previously focussing on the West African market, he is now the S+A group’s regional coordinator for European markets.
Born in Lisbon, in 1967, Pedro Guedes completed his degree in architecture at the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa, in 1994. Since 1989, he has collaborated with various studios and, in 1996, he had the opportunity to carry out a placement in a distinguished office in Washington DC, USA. From 1996 to 2011 he was part of the team of an architecture studio in Portugal, reaching the level of project manager in 2002. Between 1999 and 2012, he led his own office and, in 2012, he joined the team of account managers in a construction brokerage and management company; in 2014 he became its director. In 2015 he was invited to develop S+A’s globalisation study in the United States of America as partner of the group.
