Building restoration and heritage conservation
The Calçada do Galvão project in the Belém neighbourhood in Lisbon involved the revitalisation of a secular building through extensive refurbishment for a new typological programme. The project’s architectural, heritage and artistic elements represented an added value for the solution developed, renewing the charm of the original. The use of high quality materials represented a significant investment in the development of comfortable contemporary spaces adapted to current family life. The project comprises eight large apartments in a total construction area of 980 sqm.
All infrastructure was replaced with a total reorganisation of the typology of the apartments according to high thermal and acoustic efficiency standards. The project privileged the significant potential for natural light offered by high ceilings, wide openings and good orientation and solar exposure. All residential spaces represent a successful formal and architectural articulation in relation to the pre-existing structures. Striking a balance between history and contemporary life, the new solutions result in comfortable, light and generous interior spaces that enjoy good circulation and access and which feature terraces with exceptional views of the tropical garden and river.
