CUF Sintra

Under the watchful eye of the impressive Serra da Sintra hills, which provide the backdrop, is the new CUF Hospital developed by S+A. The aim was to come up with an image that reconciled the existing building, industrial in nature, and the new constructions. The two-level extension creates continuity of the built complex around a central square. The volumes feature window openings torn into the facades, framed by white prismatic elements. The built surroundings include dedicated green areas for contemplation that further the exterior quality of the area of intervention and humanise the facility.

  • Location: Sintra, Portugal
  • Sector: Healthcare
  • Year: 2020
  • Area: 15.280 sqm
  • Client: JMS
  • Stage: Built

The main entrance and patient admission area are in an open space between the buildings, which, in addition to visibility from the square, also features an interior courtyard that facilitates the difference in scale and integration of said space with the natural green surroundings.

The location of the cafeteria terrace space to the south is appropriate, given the exposure to the sun and protection from the prevailing winds from the north. The central square provides the main public access to the building and features a meticulously designed gathering space protected from the sun by an awning.
