Introduction

The volumetric and spatial approach and concept for the complex was focussed on creating a festive Olympic atmosphere in which architecture and culture merge to produce a historical legacy for both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. Conceived as a permanent sports facility, it was designed to host sporting events as part of the XXXI Summer Olympics, a thrilling experience we looked to turn into a permanent, positive and sustainable feature of the territory’s development.

Despite the wide range of facilities to be developed and the distinct formal requirements of each, we sought to establish an implicit sense of unity, a transversal line running through the entire complex.
The motto ‘A Green Project for a Blue Planet’ was not only intended in a philosophical sense, but in a pragmatic, material and logical sense as well. In addition to meeting the extensive LEED certification criteria, a number of other sustainability practices were implemented.
