Fafe Hospital

The new Hospital in Fafe was to be located in Fornelos in the north of Fafe, in an area of scattered urban density structured only by the most important local road network. Generally speaking, the new Hospital in Fafe was to be housed in a building with one floor underground, meant to house the Transport Centre and supporting services; a semiunderground floor, for Emergency Care, Imaging and several general support hospital services; and 2 floors above ground, while the ground floor was to house the Outpatient consultation area and the Blood Collection Centre, Outpatient Surgery, Laboratory, and other services. The first floor was to be for the Long-Term Care Services and the Unit for Surgery Patients and Internal Medicine, having a total capacity of 52 beds.

  • Location: Braga, Portugal
  • Sector: Healthcare
  • Year: 2009
  • Area: 52 beds
  • Client: Regional Health Administration for Northern Portugal
  • Stage: Primary Study

The roofs and courtyards created or freed up by the volumic positioning of the blocks served to provide natural lighting to the interior
of the building and were given a landscape-like treatment, so as to bestow a pleasant feeling of proximity with nature. The volumic distribution of the hospital building, with its profusion of courtyards surrounded by built blocks, allows for considerable penetration of natural light into the interior; this is aided by the use of glass curtain walls throughout the whole height of the floors on the façades, creating veritable landscaped cloisters, in line with the best traditions of Southern European architecture. The block to house the hospitalisation wards faced Northeast-Southeast and was to have the rooms and nurseries placed on one side to offer the best direct sunlight and views.
