This proposal was for an area in an extraordinary location in Astana. The fortunate coincidence of the intersection between two axes of high symbolic and urban value made this specific location the urban foundations for buildings of high visibility, expression and symbolism. The plot of land on which this study focused were to be used for Expo 2017. Our first aim was the conceptual statement to be made by a Monumental Gateway, an unequivocal point in this important access route. The second conceptual line that emerged from the Master Plan design was the Volumic Fragmentation, which consisted in proposing several buildings, which, based, as they were, on a strong and rigorous urban design, took on diversity and a marked expression of centrality, thus allowing for a strong connection of the City with the Expo and its expansion areas.

  • Location: Astana, Kazakhstan
  • Sector: Urban Design
  • Year: 2014
  • Area: 422.730 sqm
  • Client: Arch Inter Build
  • Stage: Primary Study

The third conceptual line was the rise or gradual growth in height of the towers, culminating at the centre with the largest volumetry and affirming unequivocally the great gateway and the axis of access into the Expo zone that was integrated into the monumental square; it included the space of the four towers which frame the monumental square, and assert themselves in the city. The fourth conceptual line resulted from the synthesis of the previous three and converged in the affirmation of the four central towers on the urban scale, thus designing a skyline that was noticeable from afar, and akin to four “lighthouses” that attract and guide you to the entrance.

The proposed materiality, with its strong focus on glass, was to accentuate the notion of the gateway as a mirror image of Astana, as a gateway to the future. The various plots in the proposal, despite representing different interventions with various occupations, were approached as a whole, thus taking on a strength and coherence that gave full expression to the design’s central intention, that of the widespread affirmation of the gateway as an urban and architectural landmark in Astana. The complex consisted of residential areas, office areas with a business centre, support areas for the residences, shopping spaces and parking areas.
