National Research Oncology Centre
Structure as a symbol of life, knowledge and science
Introduction
The project is developed through several functional cores, highlighting the following valences: hospital unit with a cancer research centre, outpatient treatment and hospitalisation; university teaching, a hotel and a parking building, all designed in the image of a solid concept that prioritises the humanisation of services, providing more comfort for users, family members and healthcare professionals. The building rises seven floors above the ground in the main body and responds logically to the functional and operational plan for the modernisation of medicine, with attention paid to the possible conversion potential of its interior spaces. At the same time, it responds adequately to the challenges posed by strict local legislation for these healthcare facilities. The layout of the building seeks a balance between the volumes and the landscape; the complex is cyclically interrupted by courtyards that are carefully designed to capture light and natural ventilation, providing systems of views over the green spaces, inviting contemplation and enjoyment, both for users and their families.
