Portugal’s Pavillion EXPO 2020
The theme of “A World in a Country” originated two structural concept lines that symbolise and affirm the winning proposal for the pavilion to represent Portugal at the first ever Expo to be held in the Middle East, alongside 191 other countries. The Caravel is the greatest symbol of our connection to the world and, in a wider interaction process, the genesis of globalisation.
The expressiveness of the Caravel takes on a conceptual character that materialises in an abstraction and a volumic synthesis that emphasises the horizontality of the contact with the oceans and the trajectory of the Discoveries, as well as the reinterpretation of the verticality of the sails with the wind as their only driving force. The marketplace or square as the epitome of place of meeting and sharing.
